My workplace is a bit off and the nearest distance by public transport is 10 km. All my co-workers have a car except me. The distance, however, doesn’t bother me. On the contrary, I like that it is a bit of a distance to work. It’s a good stretch to walk or run. If I’m not cycling all the way from home – a distance is just over 60 km – I gladly take the commuter train to any station along the way, so I can bike at least 15 km to work.
During my NVC trip I will go the Camino de Santiago back and forth. My plan is to go about a marathon a day. Until then, I need to get used to move my body more than I usually do in my ordinary life. One way is to increase the number of steps I do every day. Now in March I walk at least 18,000 steps a day and in April I will walk at least 19,000 steps a day. Another way to increase the intensity is to lengthen my walks.
This Friday I started my weekend period at work. Instead of walking or running the ordinary 10 km, I took a bus to a stop just over 16 km from work. Now on Monday when I stop working I will find a bus stop that is about 18 km from work.
On my way to work, I was reminded of one of the reasons why I am putting myself in such hardships. I want to experience things, I want to be aware of the present moment, I want to be in contact with the ground, the air and the surrounding nature. I don’t just want to get from point A to point B.
Along the roadside I saw a lot of incredibly beautiful snow sculptures created by nature. If I had a car, I would probably have missed them, or at least couldn’t enjoy them as much. Now during my walk I could enjoy them and for a while the journey became more important than the goal.
